Why Ujjwala Hasn’t Extinguished Chulhas In Rural and Small-Town India | Sanjay Dutta | The Times of India

On the face of it, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has accomplished a lot.  Since the scheme was launched on May 1, 2016, more than 7 crore households have received subsidized cooking gas (LPG) connections.  Over 82% of those who got the connections have bought refills in the first year.  A survey done by r.i.c.e. in February, 2019 found that 90% of Ujjwala beneficiaries still use old ways of cooking.  Beneficiaries cite the high cost of LPG refills and the belief that food cooked on a chulha is tastier as reasons for using the old ways.  Read more...
