The Indian government has filed papers in the High Court in Delhi arguing against criminalizing marital rape and stating that doing so would destabilize the institution of marriage.

The petitioners in the case have relied on a 2014 study conducted by Aashish Gupta of r.i.c.e. which revealed that most incidents of sexual violence were committed by husbands of the survivors and the number of women who experienced sexual violence by husbands was forty times the number of women who experienced sexual violence by non-intimate perpetrators.  Read More...
