Presentation at UNICEF and new paper: Sanitation and child height

Written by Dean Spears on December 12th, 2012

Much of my work these days has been about the importance of sanitaiton for children’s health and growth into tall, smart adults. This is especially important in India, where over half of housholds do not use toilets or latrines. The resulting public mess introduces germs into the environment that make children sick on a very large scale. It is important to think carefully about what sort of solutions would help, but a first step is recognizing the magnitude of the problem.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to present about this at UNICEF in New York. I really appreciate the helpful questions and feedback. Here are my slides, if you’re interested in the presentation:

If you’re interested in the details, all of this is part of a new working paper “How much international variation in child height can sanitation explain?,” available on our research page.
