“More than baby steps required”

The Hindu has written a compelling editorial on child mortality in India. We’re visiting Bangladesh these days to learn from their success in reducing open defecation, and are as struck as the editorialists are by the comparison between these neighboring countries: children in Bangladesh, while poorer, are more likely to survive.

The last sentence is a welcome call: “Even while steps are taken to address health issues, open defecation and the lack of clean drinking water — both of which have a direct link to the health of children — have to be tackled on a war footing.” We have seen nothing in India quite like the coordinated campaign to improve sanitation that we hear about again and again here in Bangladesh.
